A pap smear is a routine test for cervical cancer that involves using a speculum to open the vagina and see the cervix, then using a brush to collect some cells from the cervix that are sent to the lab for analysis. 

Management of periods that are irregular, long, heavy and/or painful can be done pharmacologically with prescription hormones, or naturally with lifestyle changes, nutritional analysis and supplementation. If you are interested in the later, we will likely coordinate you care with a nutritionist.

We offer screening for sexually transmitted infections, with or without symptoms, and testing for discomfort, odor or abnormal vaginal discharge. STIs must be treated with prescription medication. UTIs and yeast infections can be prescribed for, or we can coordinate with a nutritionist for a naturopathic remedy.

Family planning services include: prescription of birth control pills, patches and rings, insertion and removal of IUDs and the arm implant Nexplanon, and instruction in Fertility Awareness Methods.

We believe that adequate pain management for procedures is very important. If you are interested in an IUD or Nexplanon, two appointments are necessary. During the first, we will discuss how the device works, the risks and benefits, and what to expect with insertion. We will also provide prescriptions for anxiety or pain management based on your preferences. During the second appointment, we will insert the device. IUD insertions are followed by a quick ultrasound to confirm placement.

Gentle gynecology offers first trimester ultrasound for dating and viability of pregnancy. We are happy to see you weekly if you have bleeding or anxiety about the well-being of your baby.
